Former Baywatch star and America’s Got Talent judge David Hasselhoff showed he’s got heart by flying halfway across the world to stand by an ailing singer friend who may never sing again. Hasselhoff arrived in Johannesburg earlier this month to learn Afrikaans in preparation for recording what could be his friend’s swansong.
Popular South African singer and TV celebrity Patricia Lewis, recently discovered that she had non-cancerous tumors on her thyroid. Before having them surgically removed this month Lewis wanted to record what could be the last songs of her career as the operation could permanently damage her vocal chords. When The Hoff heard the bombshell news he dashed from America to record two songs with Lewis who has been his friend since the Eighties. Last week he also appeared on stage in Johannesburg with Lewis to perform the new songs. One is an English duet titled ‘As I Am’ while the other is an Afrikaans song with the English title ‘Miss Kiss Kiss Bang’.
‘David sounds fantastic,’ said Lewis. ‘His Afrikaans with an American twang is very unique. I coached him line by line. It was hilarious and a lot of fun. We killed ourselves laughing in the studio. But he is fast learner. He only took a few hours to master the song.’
Lewis said she was flabbergasted when David announced he was flying to South Africa to record with her.
‘It showed me what an amazing person he is. I was overwhelmed and grateful. He rearranged his schedule at the drop of a hat and spent 22 hours flying to get here. That’s the mark of a true friend.’

HOLLYWOOD star David Hasselhoff and Radio One DJ Scott Mills spent Father’s Day at a paintballing activities centre near Husbands Bosworth.
The 56-year-old actor, famous for starring roles in the Baywatch and Knight Rider television series, went with his daughters Hayley (16) and Taylor-Ann (19), along with his 35-old-year DJ friend, to Armourgeddon, based at Southfields Farm on Sunday.
Their visit was filmed for a six-part television special to be aired on Living TV in September.
The show will see The Hoff, as he is known, take part in outdoor pursuits such as polo, shooting and, of course, tank paintballing.
The Husbands Bosworth farm is the only place in the world where people can play paintballing in army-style tanks.
“Whilst filming in South Africa exclusively for The Underwater Channel, David ‘The Hoff’ Hasselhoff recorded his own personal message for World Oceans Day to our viewers:
In early June, 1992 108 government heads sat down with 2,400 non-governmental organisations and 17,000 background consultants in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This was the Earth Summit and one of the many moves towards climate and environmental improvement was the suggestion by the Government of Canada, endorsed by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO, to declare 8 June World Oceans Day. In December, 2008 the United Nations resolved that henceforth from 2009, 8 June would be celebrated globally as World Oceans Day.
The Underwater Channel (UWC) is passionately committed to highlighting the many issues that threaten the world’s oceans.
To this end we are thrilled to announce that our petition to the UN against shark finning has just reached its target of 10,000 signatures! Please see Not on our Menu and we particularly want to thank ‘The Hoff’ and Umberto Pelizzari for their terrific support and not least to all of you around the world who have made reaching this target possible by World Oceans Day.”
“Actor and adventurer extraordinaire - David Hasselhoff - came to Shark Park to campaign for an end to shark finning with the http://www.underwaterchannel.tv/ . Nicholoas Claxton is the man behind the http://www.underwaterchannel.tv/ and he put the whole programme together at incredibly short notice. David’s time at Shark Park was nothing short of amazing with the team having ten tiger sharks, half a dozen raggies and well over one hundred blacktips over the three days. the visibility was excellent and the water a balmy 24 degrees celsius. The weather played its part and hopefully David’s message will be well received around the world.
For those fans wanting to know what he was like both in the water and out:
He was amazing and a natural. Shark Park was filled with fans of the “Hoff” and he didn’t dissappoint, signing autographs for each and every one despite a hectic schedule.
A huge debt of gratitude from all of us at Blue Wilderness to “The Hoff” for giving sharks a chance!!!!”
